Franse NGO vindt ‘alarmerend’ aandeel nanostoffen in consumentenproducten

News and developments

Dirty laundry: Microplastic pollution from machine and handwashing revealed

If you’re anything like me, garment care instructions which read “handwash only” are to be regarded as more suggestion than hard-and-fast rule. So, the findings of a study from the American Chemical Society make for somewhat unwelcome news for those already overburdened by laundry*. The research published in ACS Environmental Science & Technology Water, finds handwashing clothes reduces microplastic pollution and is “environmentally greener”, compared to using a machine. Previous research has shown microplastics (tiny plastic particles or fibers smaller than 5mm in diameter) are released when clothes are machine-washed. These can end up in wastewater and the environment. Last year a report on sustainable textiles from the Monash Sustainable Development Institute noted 35% of microplastic ocean pollution comes from washing textiles. Yet handwashing, which remains common practice in many parts of the world, has received comparatively little research attention, the paper from the American Chemical Society notes. The full study is available at this link.

Nanopinion: European nanomaterial market expected to grow – new barriers emerging

Dr Anastasios Papadiamantis and Dr Antreas Afantitis tell us about the findings of a study commissioned by the EU Observatory for Nanomaterials on the EU market for nanomaterials, including substances, uses, volumes and key operators. Read all about it in our Nanopinion guest column. The full report is available at this link.

Nanomaterials’ (bio)degradation, persistence, and safe by design (SbD) examined in a recent study

A desk study commissioned by the European Union Observatory for Nanomaterials (EUON) provides information on the state-of-the-art, the existing gaps, and the research needs of the degradation, biodegradation and persistence of nanomaterials. The study also points out the need for a common definition for ‘safe’ or ‘safer-by-design’ – the process of including safety at the earliest stage of product development – to increase the societal acceptance of nanomaterials. More information is available at this link.

French NGO finds ‘alarming’ proportion of nano substances in consumer products

An investigation by NGO Avicenn has found unlabeled nano substances in 20 out of 23 products sold on the French market, some in “alarming” proportions and breaching EU labelling rules. The nanotechnology NGO called for greater controls and sanctions on non-compliant products after tests detected nanoparticles of titanium dioxide in ten of the articles tested, mostly cosmetics from well-known brands. The full study is available at this link.

Improving safety assessment of nanoparticles

How safe are the nanoparticles in transparent sunscreen, anti-odor socks and bacteria-resistant plasters? Although microbes are present on all organisms, the tools that estimate the safety of nanomaterials still hardly take them into account. Bregje Brinkmann explored the role of these microbes during her Ph.D. research. More information is available at this link.

How to make fruit and vegetables last longer. From hi-tech coatings to improving the state of the roads, there is a plethora of ways we can reduce the amount of fruit and veg that goes bad before it reaches our plates.

One potentially promising technology is edible coating: covering fruits and vegetables in a film of protective material that can be consumed with the food. A way to boost edible coatings is to use nano-materials – materials with a particle size of less than 100 nanometres (nm) in at least one dimension (that’s 1,000 times smaller than a human hair). “If you make the particles smaller, you can improve the functional performance of edible films and coatings, for example, by increasing their strength and barrier properties,” McClements says. You can produce such minuscule particles by using lasers, vibrations, plant extracts or even certain microorganisms. In one study, after a week of storage at room temperature, most regular strawberries were covered in fungus. Among those coated with chitosan and nano-silver, however, only 10% were spoiled. Freshly cut carrots coated with silver nanoparticles stayed fine for 70 days. Uncoated carrots lasted a mere four. The full article is available at this link.
